This project was done in Grade 1. The artist was introduced through an online presentation post which children did their project. The Presentation outline is as under:

Paul Cézanne

Apples and Oranges

Who was he?

  • French artist

  • 1839-1906 (died more than 100years ago)

What kind of work did he do?

  • Cézanne worked in oil, watercolor, and drawing media, often making several versions of his works

  • Usually painted Still-lifes and landscapes

  • Developed the style of using geometric shapes as the basis for his paintings

  • He believed that everything in the world was made up of either a sphere, a cone, a cylinder or a cube (a tree trunk may be conceived of as a cylinder, a human head a sphere, for example)

  • He began many of his works with these basic shapes layering thick paint with strong outlines to build form

  • This style of painting influenced later artists who came after Cézanne such as Braque and Picasso who painted in a style known as Cubism

Some of his paintings

Rideau, Cruchon et Compotier sold for $60.5 million, The cardplayers

    • What kinds of lines do you see? Wavy, curved, straight? What could be used to draw these? (charcoal, paint, pencil, pastels? What colors do you see? Warm and cool.

    Montagne Sainte-Victoire, 1882-1885, Mont Sainte-Victoire (1885-87)

    • What colours do you see? Warm and cool? Are both these paintings of the same place? Is the view from the same angle?

Still Life works

Our Project Today

  • Why do we call it a still life?

    • When an artist draws or paints a picture of something that can't move, or isn't alive, it's called a "Still Life".

  • How many apples can you find in this painting?

  • What other things do you see?

  • Did he use straight or curved lines?

  • What shapes do you see?

    • Circles, Spheres, oval, waves and curves

  • Warm or cold colors?

  • How does he differentiate one fruit from the other?

    • Dark tones to make them 3-Dimensional

  • Our project

    • Make our masterpiece of Apples and Oranges using paint

    • As many or as few, using warm colors. We make our warm colors ourselves

Our Project materials

  • Tempera paints in a paper plate with a paint brush

    • white, black, red, yellow, green, brown

    • Make orange yourself

    • Use white or black to make lighter/darker shades

  • Water shared in a bowl

  • Sheet of white paper

    • Write your name lightly with pencil at the back

    • Use less water or paper might curl

  • Any questions – please raise your hand

    • Work quietly as you’re making your masterpiece!

(Please Note : Incase, you want the children to make a still-life, please clarify that their interpretation needs to be a still-life. If, you don't want to restrict them, a painting of Apples and Oranges  can be as varied as trees, still life, birds eating it etc.)

Other Project ideas

  • Make a still life set of Apples and Oranges with light falling from one side. The children paint it.

  • The children paint apples and oranges on fruit drawn on paper. Make cut-outs of the fruits. On a separate paper make a collage of the fruits in a bowl placed on a table. Pasting them overlapping and at different heights gives an insight into perspective.
